VIENNA — A police operation in Vienna’s Favoriten district turned violent on Monday evening when a 40-year-old man attacked officers enforcing a restraining order, leaving two policemen injured and prompting a tense arrest.
According to police, officers were dispatched around 5:30 p.m. after receiving reports that the man had violated a temporary court order prohibiting him from approaching a protected address. They located him as he was driving away from the location, and what began as a standard identity check quickly escalated.
The suspect allegedly grew agitated, lashing out with his elbow and striking one of the officers. When police attempted to arrest him, he reportedly resisted with such force that both officers were injured. The man was eventually subdued and taken into custody.
Authorities said the injured officers required hospital treatment but were later released. The suspect was questioned and, on the order of the Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office, released pending further investigation. He faces multiple charges, including resisting arrest, assaulting law enforcement officers, and driving without a valid license.
Police described the man as “extremely aggressive” during the encounter and confirmed that he had previously been the subject of legal restrictions stemming from a domestic dispute.
Officials emphasized that violations of protection and restraining orders are treated with particular seriousness, given their role in preventing domestic violence and escalation. The investigation into Monday’s incident remains ongoing.
