The mother of a 17-year-old, shot dead by police after he refused a traffic stop, is leading a march in the Parisian suburb of Nanterre.

The police officer who shot the teen, named as Nahel M, has been placed under formal investigation for voluntary homicide.

Earlier, it was announced that 40,000 police officers would be deployed across France to deal with protests that broke out after his death.

At least 180 people have been arrested so far after two nights of unrest, while 170 officers were injured, France’s interior minister says.

French media reports that some people who had planned to attend the march were fearful of more violence erupting.

President Emmanuel Macron has held a crisis meeting and called the violence on the streets “unjustifiable”.

Nahel came from a French-Algerian family, a neighbour told Reuters news agency. Their tally found that most of those killed by police in traffic stops since 2017 were black or Arab.__BBC.com
