According to Austrian Television (ORF) News, the city of Vienna has launched a special housing campaign to support students facing difficult living conditions. In a move to ease the student housing crisis, the city will make 1,000 municipal apartments available from May to the end of September—without requiring proof of urgent housing need, which is normally a strict condition.
Each apartment ranges between 35 to 45 square meters and includes one to two rooms, providing a cozy and manageable living space for young scholars. The application process will take place online through Wohnberatung Wien (Housing Consulting Vienna), making it easily accessible for eligible students.
To qualify, applicants must have been registered with their main residence in Vienna for at least two years. Beginning in May, a new rule will be introduced—students no longer need to have stayed at the same address for those two years; what matters now is simply that they were living in Vienna.
Kathrin Gaal, Vienna’s housing councilor and member of the SPÖ party, emphasized the importance of this campaign, stating that it aims to relieve students of the growing pressure caused by the city’s tight housing market. “With this action, we want to offer real support to those who carry the future of our society,” she said.
