Lavrov Urges Restraint and Civilian Protection in Call with Iran’s Foreign Minister

Russia has stepped up diplomatic efforts to cool rising tensions in the Middle East, with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov calling for de-escalation during a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, according to Al Jazeera News.

According to a statement from Russia’s Foreign Ministry, Lavrov spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and emphasized Moscow’s firm stance against further military escalation in the region. The ministry said Lavrov “confirmed a fundamental position in favour of de-escalating the situation and rejecting the use of force.”

The call comes at a time of mounting anxiety over the widening conflict in the Middle East, where fears of broader regional involvement have grown in recent days. Moscow’s message appeared aimed at encouraging restraint and promoting diplomatic channels over military action.

Beyond urging calm, Lavrov also stressed the importance of safeguarding civilians and infrastructure. He underscored the need to “ensure the safety of the civilian population and civil infrastructure in all countries of the region,” signaling concern about the humanitarian consequences of continued fighting.

Russia has historically positioned itself as a key diplomatic player in the Middle East, maintaining ties with multiple actors across the region. While the Foreign Ministry did not provide details about specific proposals discussed during the call, the emphasis on de-escalation reflects Moscow’s broader call for stability.

As tensions remain high, the conversation highlights ongoing behind the scenes diplomacy aimed at preventing further deterioration of an already fragile security landscape. Whether such appeals will translate into concrete steps on the ground remains uncertain, but the message from Moscow was clear: restraint, dialogue, and protection of civilians must take priority.
