SRINAGAR – Pakistan has called upon the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take urgent notice of rising tensions in South Asia, following the tragic killing of 26 civilians at a tourist resort in Pahalgam, located in Indian adminstrated Jammu and Kashmir, reported by Dawn News.
In response, the UNSC held an emergency closed-door session on Pakistan’s request. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, briefed all 15 members, including the five permanent powers, highlighting the worsening situation in Kashmir.
Ambassador Iftikhar expressed deep concern over India’s recent unilateral decisions, particularly its suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, which he described as a violation of international law. He also condemned ongoing human rights abuses by Indian forces in J&K, stating that innocent Kashmiris continue to face relentless persecution.
Clarifying Pakistan’s position, Ambassador Iftikhar strongly condemned the Pahalgam attack, denying any involvement and offering full cooperation in a transparent, international investigation.
“The Kashmir conflict is a historic and unresolved dispute,” he stated. “It cannot be settled without involving the Kashmiri people and respecting their aspirations.”
He warned that India’s actions threaten the peace and stability of the entire region and emphasized that only dialogue, based on mutual respect and sovereignty, can lead to lasting peace.
“Pakistan is always ready for meaningful talks,” he added, urging the international community to play a constructive role in resolving the Kashmir issue.
With the region on edge, Pakistan continues to stress that peace in South Asia hinges on justice and resolution in Kashmir.
