Is Trump Mocking India or Pakistan? Ex-President Inflates War Claims to Eight Downed Jets

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has once again stirred controversy with his latest comments on the May 2025 conflict between India and Pakistan. Speaking at the America Business Forum in Miami on Wednesday, Trump claimed that Pakistan had shot down eight Indian Air Force jets during the brief but intense confrontation earlier this year. His assertion, however, marks yet another shift in his narrative; one that has evolved steadily over the past months.

Initially, Trump had said that Pakistan downed five Indian aircraft. Weeks later, he raised the number to six. By last month, he told audiences that seven Indian jets had been destroyed. And now, in his most recent remarks, the figure has climbed to eight. “Some newspapers said seven or eight planes were shot down,” Trump told the gathering. “Eight planes were shot down essentially,” he insisted, dismissing most media outlets as unreliable.

During the May conflict, which erupted following a deadly terrorist attack on tourists in Indian administered Kashmir’s Pahalgam area, both countries exchanged fire in what became their worst confrontation in decades. The skirmish, lasting nearly four days, ended with a U.S.-brokered ceasefire on May 10.

Trump recounted that he was in the midst of negotiating trade deals with both New Delhi and Islamabad when the fighting broke out. “I read on the front page, they are going to war,” he said. “I told them, no trade deals if they’re at war. Then I got a call; they need peace.”

Whether Trump’s ever-changing numbers are an attempt at humor, political posturing, or simple exaggeration remains unclear. But his words have revived debate in South Asia and left many wondering: Is Trump mocking India or Pakistan?
