A Europe-wide human smuggling network that allegedly helped more than 450 people reach the United Kingdom has been uncovered in a coordinated operation by law enforcement agencies.
The operation took place on Tuesday and involved ten searches across several countries. One of the searches was carried out in Austria, while arrests were made in Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. Investigators said Vienna played a central role in obtaining forged travel documents, according to Austrian Press Agency.
According to information released on Wednesday, the network helped people without legal residence rights enter Britain through airports in more than 16 Schengen countries. Others reportedly travelled from Dublin. At the beginning of their journeys, many used genuine passports and valid Schengen tourist visas.
After entering the European Union, their original documents were allegedly discarded and replaced with forged papers supplied by the criminal group. The new documents were intended to hide their identities and make their travel routes difficult to follow.
The migrants were then taken to Belfast, reportedly with the help of organised taxi journeys. From there, they continued to England on domestic flights.
Austria, Spain and the United Kingdom were identified as the network’s main operating centres. In Vienna, mobile phone shops allegedly served as places where the forged travel documents were obtained.
Investigators believe the group’s total income may have exceeded two million euros. The operation was supported by authorities from Austria, Spain, Italy, Britain, Belgium, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Sweden, Portugal, the Netherlands and Norway. Europol also assisted in coordinating the action.
The case reveals how modern smuggling networks can stretch across borders, using airports, taxis and false documents to move people quietly through Europe. Investigators are now working to determine the full structure of the group and identify all those involved. The people who were allegedly smuggled have not been described as suspects in the case.
