Italy and Spain Dispatch Warships to Shield Gaza Aid Flotilla Under Fire

ROME — In a dramatic escalation on the Mediterranean, Italy and Spain have sent naval vessels to safeguard an international flotilla carrying aid to Gaza, after the convoy reportedly came under drone attack en route to the besieged territory.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, composed of roughly 50 civilian boats, is attempting to breach Israel’s longstanding naval blockade. Onboard are lawyers, lawmakers, activists, and public figures — among them Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg — who describe their mission as both a humanitarian lifeline and a political statement.

Italy’s Defense Minister Guido Crosetto confirmed Wednesday that Rome had dispatched a frigate immediately after the flotilla was targeted. That ship will soon be replaced by another vessel to continue the mission. Crosetto, addressing Italy’s upper house of parliament, rejected accusations that the move was provocative.

“This is not an act of war, it is not a provocation,” he said. “It is an act of humanity, a duty of a state toward its citizens.”

The Italian Foreign Ministry added that several European partners — including Belgium and France — had appealed for Italy’s assistance in protecting their nationals aboard the convoy.

Seeking to defuse tensions, Rome proposed a compromise: offloading the flotilla’s supplies in Cyprus, to be distributed in Gaza through the Catholic Church’s Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. But flotilla organizers swiftly rejected that offer.

“Our mission stays true to its original goal of breaking Israel’s illegal siege and delivering humanitarian aid directly to the besieged population of Gaza,” the Italian delegation declared in a statement Thursday.

The confrontation now places European nations in direct collision with Israel’s blockade policy. For activists aboard the flotilla, the risks underscore the urgency of their mission. For Mediterranean governments, the standoff raises the stakes in a conflict already threatening to spill far beyond Gaza’s shorelines.
