China Challenges the West’s Moral Authority Amid Gaza War

International

The war in Gaza has become more than a humanitarian catastrophe — it is a mirror reflecting the shifting moral and political balance of global power, according to The Friday Times. This theme echoed powerfully at the 9th International Forum on Asia and the Middle East, held at Shanghai International Studies University in late September, where scholars from across Asia and the Arab world gathered to debate the Middle East’s changing geopolitical landscape.

Speaking at the forum, I argued that Gaza has once again revealed the fractures within the global order. The devastation has not only shattered lives but also reshaped diplomacy, challenging the West’s moral authority and opening new space for emerging powers, particularly China, to redefine leadership through what might be called normative diplomacy.

For decades, Washington has claimed to be both Israel’s steadfast ally and the Middle East’s peace broker. Yet its repeated vetoes of UN ceasefire resolutions and $3.8 billion in annual military aid to Israel have exposed a troubling selectivity in its moral compass. This has alienated much of the Arab world and the Global South, eroding America’s once-unquestioned legitimacy.

Into this vacuum has stepped China, moving beyond its Belt and Road pragmatism to pursue a diplomacy grounded in humanitarianism and international law. The Beijing Declaration of 2024, with its roadmap for ceasefire, Palestinian unity, and statehood, positioned Beijing as a credible advocate for peace. Its modest but symbolic $3 million aid to UNRWA and coordination with Egypt and Saudi Arabia underscore a strategic blend of empathy and influence.

Meanwhile, Western powers face a reckoning. Mounting public pressure has already pushed the United Kingdom and France to recognize Palestine, signaling a shift in Europe’s moral posture. Even Washington, under renewed scrutiny, confronts the challenge of pairing its military dominance with moral clarity.

As the Trump-led peace initiative gains cautious traction, the Gaza conflict now stands as a crucible for a new world order; one where legitimacy is earned not through might but through moral consistency. In the twenty-first century, as China rises and the West reflects, Gaza reminds the world that leadership depends as much on conscience as on power.
