Austria Joins India in Developing Defense Cooperation

Austria and India are stepping into a new era of cooperation, one that reaches far beyond diplomacy. During Chancellor Christian Stocker’s historic visit to New Delhi, both countries agreed to work together in defense, technology, and counterterrorism, signaling a major shift in their relationship, according to Heute.

It was the first visit by an Austrian chancellor to India in 42 years. Standing beside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Stocker spoke of “partnership in turbulent times.” Modi echoed the sentiment, saying, “No military conflict can bring peace. True stability must come through dialogue.” Both leaders appealed for peaceful solutions to crises in Ukraine and the Middle East, stressing negotiation over confrontation.

The meeting resulted in several new agreements. A key declaration outlines plans for joint military training, exchange visits of naval and air forces, and cooperation in developing and producing weapons. Though Austria’s neutrality was not mentioned, officials clarified that the agreement does not carry legal obligations. Another accord focuses on fighting terrorism, aiming to improve information sharing and prevention between the two countries.

“We deepen our security cooperation through trust and dialogue,” Stocker said. “In today’s world, peace cannot end at the border, it must be shared.” He described the partnership as broad and modern, covering trade, science, and security alike.

Modi called the visit “a milestone for Austria and India,” welcoming Stocker’s choice of India as his first non-European destination as chancellor. The event also brought other agreements from reducing bureaucracy and improving food safety to making Austria more appealing for Bollywood film shoots, signed by Austrian Economy Minister Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer and his Indian counterpart Piyush Goyal.
