Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig Calls for Unity, Housing Reform, and Gun Ban on May Day

Austria

Vienna, Austria – On May 1st, Mayor Michael Ludwig led the city’s May Day celebration at Rathausplatz, sharing his vision for a safer, fairer, and more united Vienna.

In front of thousands of supporters and party members, Ludwig highlighted the Social Democratic Party’s (SPÖ) recent success in local elections, where it secured the top spot in 95% of voting districts. “May Day is not just a holiday. It’s a day to stand up for justice,” Ludwig said.

He acknowledged the city’s current budget challenges but made it clear that these issues were inherited. “We are ready to face them together,” he added, calling on citizens to stay united.

Ludwig also announced major investments in healthcare, with €3.3 billion planned to improve services for all residents. In addition, a new housing policy will make it easier for young people to get affordable apartments.

The mayor strongly criticized the far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ), stating that he would not negotiate with them now or in the future. He warned that without strong leadership, Austria could face dangerous political shifts.

One of Ludwig’s biggest calls was for a citywide gun ban. “Other mayors agree—our cities should be safe for everyone,” he said.

Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler also spoke at the event, calling the day “uplifting” and promising fair solutions to improve everyday life.

Mayor Ludwig closed his speech with a hopeful message: “Let’s work together to keep Vienna the most livable city in the world. Long live May Day!”
