France Arrests Afghan Man Suspected of Aiding Islamic State Affiliate
French authorities have arrested a 20 year old Afghan man suspected of maintaining ties with the Islamic State’s Khorasan branch, known as IS-K, a group notorious for its violent reach across Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Central Asia, according to AFP.
The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) announced Saturday that the suspect, taken into custody in Lyon last week, has been charged with participating in a criminal terrorist organization and financing terrorism. He has since been placed in pre-trial detention.
According to the anti-terrorism unit, investigators believe the young man had been in direct contact with members of IS-K, allegedly sending money and assisting in the group’s propaganda efforts. Authorities suspect he helped translate and circulate extremist material online, part of a broader digital network used by IS-K to recruit and radicalize followers across social media platforms.
French daily Le Parisien reported that the suspect, who arrived in France several years ago, was apprehended by officers from the DGSI domestic intelligence agency while already being held in an administrative detention center in Lyon. He had previously drawn the attention of authorities for allegedly glorifying terrorism and spreading extremist content on TikTok and Snapchat.
IS-K has claimed responsibility for several devastating attacks in recent years, including the March 2024 assault on a Moscow concert hall that left 150 people dead. The group’s growing international footprint has heightened fears across Europe of its potential to inspire or coordinate attacks beyond its traditional strongholds.
French prosecutors said the investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to trace the extent of the suspect’s connections and financial activities linked to the terrorist network.
