Austria’s Freedom Party (FPÖ) has clinched a historic victory in Styria’s regional elections, seizing 34.8% of the vote and ending decades of dominance by traditional parties. This is the FPÖ’s third consecutive electoral win under Mario Kunasek’s leadership, further bolstering their national momentum. The ruling Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) suffered a steep decline to 26.8%, while the Social Democrats (SPÖ) hit a historic low of 21.4%.

In Graz, the provincial capital, the ÖVP barely retained its lead with 22.4%, as the FPÖ surged to 21.4%, reflecting its growing appeal even in urban areas. The Greens experienced a dramatic fall, securing only 14%, while the Communists and NEOS rounded out the results with 10.2% and 9.9%, respectively.

Voter turnout rose to 70%, up from 63% in 2019, signaling strong engagement despite widespread dissatisfaction. Surveys indicated key voter concerns included migration, childcare, and the controversial Liezener hospital project. Notably, 76% of respondents believe Styria has stagnated or regressed over the past five years.

This sweeping result solidifies the FPÖ as a formidable force in Austrian politics, setting the stage for new coalitions and challenges to the status quo.
