VIENNA: A clear victory of incumbent Alexander Van der Bellen triggered numerous reactions on the evening of the election on the night of 9th Ocotber 2022. His six opponent congratulated him, but regretted across the board that it was not possible to force a runoff election. However they were some how satisfied with their own performance and took it as proof that a fundamental change was needed.
Preliminary result is available
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) presented the preliminary result – without postal votes – in the evening. Karner takes the opportunity to thank the many honorary employees of the electoral authority, i.e. the assessors. Experience has shown that the extrapolation – which takes into account the probable result of the postal votes – is closer to the final result.
Extrapolation including absentee ballot forecast 08:44 p.m Bruner 2.17%, Grossz 5.96%, Rosenkranz19.09%, Staudinger1.56%, Van der Bellen54.60%, Wallentin8.39%, Wlazny8.23%.
Van der Bellen says thank you
Once again, Van der Bellen would like to thank everyone who voted, no matter who ever they voted. As a candidate, I would like to thank all supporters and would like to thank “above all” the Greens for their financial and organizational support. And I also says “thank you” to the donors – and “thank you that we don’t have to finance a runoff election as well”.
Von der Leyen looks forward to further cooperation
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen congratulates “Van der Bellen and Austria” and looks forward to “further good cooperation”.
Swiss counterpart congratulates
Swiss President Ignazio Cassis congratulates Van der Bellen on his re-election. “Congratulations,” Cassis wrote on Twitter. “As good neighbors, we have more in common than the Alps and Lake Constance – politically, economically and culturally. I look forward to continuing our friendly and strategic partnership.”__Courtesy ORF
