SRINAGAR: A civilian and four forces’ personnel were killed and eight others including a CRPF commandant wounded during a gunfight in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Friday.
Quoting official sources, news agency GNS reported that one of the two militants presumed dead during the gunfight in Babagund area opened fire on the search party, resulting in injuries to a CRPF inspector, a policeman and five army soldiers.
All the injured were shifted to a hospital where CRPF inspector namely Pintoo Singh of 92 BN CRPF and the policeman of SOG Handwara namely Naseer Ahmad succumbed.
It said that a CRPF commandant, one paramilitary trooper, a policeman and two more soldiers were injured in the fresh gunfight.
All the injured were evacuated to a military hospital where two of them–one CRPF man and the policeman—succumbed, taking the death toll of four personnel to four.
The gunfight broke out shortly after midnight following a search operation launched by the army’s 22 RR, 92 Battalion CRPF and SOG launched a cordon-and-search operation at Khanan Babagund in Langate.
A civilian was killed and four youth injured during clashes near the site of the gunfight. While three were hit by pellets, one had suffered a gunshot wound in his leg.
All the injured were taken to district hospital Handwara for treatment.
An eye witness said that Waseem Ahmad Mir, son of Muhammad Akbar Mir of Sagipora Sopore was injured during clashes near the gunfight site in Babagund village of Langate.
He was shifted to district hospital Handwara where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Dr Rouf, Medical Superintendent District hospital Handwara confirmed the death of Mir. “He was declared dead on arrival at the facility,” said Dr Rouf.__GK News
