LONDON: The husband of a 49-year-old woman from Suffolk county in Britain walked out on their 25-year-old marriage after shechose her 30 rescue dogs over him.
Mike Haslam, 53, gave Liz the “it’s me or the dogs” ultimatum to his wife after he was fed up of dogs invading their home. Liz refused to compromise and let go of her dogs. She instead asked him to pack his bags.
“I haven’t seen or heard from him since. I thought after 25 years, he should know giving up the dogs was not what my intentions were,” the mother of one said, according to stories.swns.com.
Liz and Mike got married in January 1991 and have a 21-year-old son, Ollie. Liz was 16 when she left home to move in with Mike after finishing school.
“He just got to the point where he had enough and he wanted to slow down. But I wasn’t prepared to give it all up. So he decided to go, and obviously, that was his choice,” said Liz.
Liz said she grew up with dogs for most of her life. Her mother bred West Highland Terriers and her father owned an animal food business. She started a boarding kennel business seven years ago in Barnham, Suffolk. Eventually, she founded BedforBullies – which rescues Bull Terrier dogs – and began fostering pooches.
“We just drifted more and more apart. He was heavily into his work and it left me with nothing to do. I didn’t want to be a work widow so I buried myself in my dogs. He knew from the moment that we got together what I was all about. I don’t know what he expected,” Liz said.
Mike told Liz he was going and that he had made alternate accommodation arrangements.
Liz is fostering 30 rescue dogs, including five deaf dogs and two with only one eye, who require constant care and she ends up spending 18 hours per day helping them. A few of them are ex-fighting dogs, one suffers from brain damage and other defects, according to boredpanda.com.
“It is a very deliberating job, you can’t have a day off. I don’t sit down till 11:30pm at night so you can’t just go on holiday. And I can’t just turn around and say I am not going to do it anymore, it is my responsibility, I took the dogs in I can’t just stop.”__Hindustan Times
