UNITED NATIONS: Members of the UN Security Council rejected a Russian resolution condemning ‘aggression’ against Syria after the US, British, and French launched military air strikes on multiple government targets in Syria early on Saturday in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack that killed dozens of people last week.

The intervention is the biggest by Western powers against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the country’s seven-year civil war and pitted the US and its allies against Russia. But the three countries said the strikes were limited to Syria’s chemical weapons stock and not aimed at toppling Assad or intervening in the country’s civil war.

Only three countries — Russia, China, and Bolivia — voted in favour of the resolution at an emergency Security Council meeting on Saturday. Eight countries voted against and four abstained.__EuroNews
