SHOPIAN: A civilian was killed in clashes as security forces fired to quell protests against a cordon and search operation in south Kashmir’s Shopian.

A civilian was killed after security forces allegedly fired to disperse people protesting against a cordon and search operation in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday, police sources said.

Shopian district health official confirmed the casualty and identified the man as Adil Ahmed, the son of one Farooq Magrey. “He was hit in the chest by the bullet and was brought dead to the hospital,” a senior official said. Locals said he was 22 years old.

A police statement said “security forces cordoned off some houses on a specific input regarding the presence of militants at Ganawpora in Shopian”.

“During the search operation an unruly mob started heavy stone pelting on the forces and also a brief exchange of fire took place,” it said, adding a search operation was on.

Although the police statement said Adil died of a bullet injury, it did not specify the cause of the injury.

The militancy-hit state has been rocked by months of unrest and stone pelting over alleged human rights abuses.
