NEW YORK: Witnesses said the motorist had driven against traffic. Seven people were being placed on stretchers, a Reuters witness said. Shoes were scattered at the scene and one person was covered by a bloodstained blanket.
A car ploughed through a crowded Times Square pedestrian walkway in New York on Thursday morning, killing at least one and leaving at least 20 people injured.
The 26-year-old driver was in the custody of police, who said he was intoxicated. He has a history of driving while drunk and has been involved in two separate such incidents, a law enforcement official said.
News outlets said he is from the Bronx borough.
Television footage showed police officers restraining a man in a dark T-shirt and placing him in a police car.
“Due to a vehicle collision with pedestrian injuries, emergency vehicles are in the area of #TimesSquare. Expect delays in the area,” the New York Police Department tweeted.
Police do not suspect a terror link, but a bomb squad will carry out a check on the car.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer tweeted that the President “has been made aware of the situation in Times Square and will continue to receive updates”.
The car in the Times Square incident was a red Honda, which was speeding and had seemed out of control by witnesses, before it hit pedestrians. Witnesses said the motorist had driven against traffic. Seven people were being placed on stretchers, a witness said. Shoes were scattered at the scene and one person was covered by a bloodstained blanket, the witness said.
Terror attacks involving a speeding vehicle that ploughed through crowded public areas killing many people have taken place in Germany and France in recent months.
