SRINAGAR: Security personnel allegedly shot dead a 22-year-old in Srinagar on Saturday, triggering fresh protests in a valley tense over several video clips showing alleged human rights violation by the armed forces.

A police spokesperson said they were trying to ascertain the cause and circumstance leading to the death of Sajad Hussain Sheikh of Chandoosa in Baramulla. Sheikh was based at SD Colony in Batamaloo, on the outskirts of Srinagar.

“Somebody shot somebody. We are verifying,” said Imtiyaz Parray, the Srinagar superindent of police Srinagar.

The state’s director general of police SP Vaid said there are allegations that the youth died in firing by Border Security Force (BSF) jawans.

He said some BSF vehicles travelling in the area lost their way to the airport when a group of people pelted stones on the convoy. The BSF personnel allegedly opened fire in retaliation leading to the death. “I spoke to SSP Srinagar, he told me that they were trying to ascertain,” Vaid said.

Residents of Batamaloo said the youth was hit on the head by a bullet.

A BSF spokesman said that they were trying to ascertain whether the claims were true.

As soon as the news of the death spread, youth came out protesting and shouting slogans. The situation was very tense late in the evening.

Batamaloo station house officer Parvez Ahmad said that they yet to confirm what happened due to the law and order situation.

Kashmir has been tense over the past few days with several video clips purportedly showing alleged rights abuses by the army being widely circulated and social media.

Two fresh videos emerged on Saturday, showing soldiers beating up a youth and forcing others to shout anti-Pakistan slogans.

The army said that it would ascertain the veracity of the footage and take appropriate action.

The purported videos emerged just a day after another video in which army personnel were seen having tied a youth to the fender of their jeep and parading him through villages in Budgam district to bring stone-pelting under control.

In one of the two fresh videos, four people who appear to be army personnel are seen catching hold of a youth, pinning him to the ground and thrashing him with a cane.

In the second video, three youth who seem to be under army custody in a vehicle are forced by a soldier to abuse Pakistan and shout slogans like “Pakistan murdabad”.

“Azaadi chahiyay tum ko (do you want freedom)?” one soldier is seen asking the youth before slapping them and hitting them with a stick.

Blood is seen oozing from the forehead of one of the youth in the army vehicle.

Defence spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia said the veracity of the videos is being ascertained.

“Action will be taken against those found guilty of misconduct,” Col Kalia said.__Hindustan Times
